Now that the major indices have broken out above the highs of their multi-week trading ranges, without pulling back first, this may be a good time for traders to consider raising protective stops on any broad-based ETFs they've been holding.

There is a clearly defined pattern delineated on the chart for the Russell 2000 which shows that a break below the steeply rising trendline through the lows would be considered by some technical analysts to be a significant violation.

For more than a year, the "recovery" bounce in the stock market has refused to give up.

An opening gap to the downside refused to go any lower and stabilized early on. A rally ensued which reached new session highs with about an hour to go, and then they backed them off in the last hour.

Mutual funds, hedge funds, and other market-moving institutional players apparently remained on the sidelines yesterday, while retail investors drove the market higher.

At least the economic model of the bubble era made sense. The producers produced. The consumers consumed. That worked great until the consumers ran out of money.

The stock market indices had a very strong start to the day today, moving sharply off the opening levels to new session highs and rally highs, and 2010 highs in the first 90 minutes or so.  At that point, they pulled back and consolidated for the rest of the session, bounced late in the day but weren’t able to reach the earlier highs.
