The indices closed up again on Tuesday, starting with a gap up and strong surge early on that took the indices to new 2009 highs on the Nasdaq 100 and reaching right at key overhead resistance near 1120 on the S&P 500, but were thwarted there.

The 12 percent drop in the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) from the Dec 3 high at 119.54 appears to have more downside ahead.

Yesterday, the Nasdaq Composite became the first of the major indices to finally break out above its six-week-long sideways range. This tells Deron Wagner bets on the long side of the market should continue to include tech positions, though a few other sectors such as energy and agriculture are also perking up.

The 1990's was the best calendar decade in history for stocks, with an annual gain on average of 17.5%.  This decade, by contrast, was the worst calendar decade for stocks.

The indices started the week with solid gains, the majority of which were gotten in the morning, when the indices gapped up and staged a 5-wave advance.
