It's quite possible the volatility and indecision stocks have experienced over the past few days is the market's way of trying to find a near-term bottom.

There's something else going on -- something much more important and much harder to deal with than an ordinary recession. The feds have thrown everything into the battle to stop this downturn. No matter how you look at it, the ammunition spent in this fight has been spectacular.

The stock market indices opened with a gap today, strongly to the upside, took out resistance on the Nasdaq 100 at 1840 and filled the gap up to 1850 on the S&P 500.

Stocks are again trying to bounce off their lows, but there are not yet buyable patterns that excite Deron Wagner. Instead, he's more inclined to wait for the bounce to move into major levels of resistance, then initiate new short positions again.

Speculators are just doing their job.  They see that the real problem is debt.

The stock market indices definitely had a turnaround Tuesday. After huge down gaps smacked the indices sharply lower at the opening, they then followed up in the next 10-15 minutes at even lower levels, reaching down near 1040 on the S&P 500 for new pullback lows and down around the 1756 level on the Nasdaq 100.

Technically, the action in the VIX is not confirming the weakness in the S&P 500.
