The market appears to be headed higher, as it has been consolidating for five consecutive days at the highs of the November 30 rally. However, the intraday volatility warrants caution.

The stock market indices had a volatile day today as they came down hard at the opening, double-bottomed early on, and then rallied sharply midday only to pullback in a very organized, orderly pattern to test support.

The automatic cuts probably aren't going to happen -- at least, not the way they were supposed to happen. The pols are negotiating now. Their challenge is how to scam the voters and investors by pretending to cut spending, without really cutting much of anything.
