Around the Horn: Stocks to Watch for January 31

Overnight futures trading is pointing to a sharply lower opening on Thursday. As it is currently 11 p.m. Eastern, there is still plenty of time for the situation to change, but for right now I will continue to focus my energy on the short side and hope that gap openings in my stocks to watch and trading plan lists will also generate pattern entries that will allow me to profit even if my anticipated entry price is passed on the open.

Nordic American Tanker Shipping Inc. (NAT) is a Switch Hitter set up that will be on our radar for Thursday's trading. A move below 29.95 will have me interested in the short side on this one, but the thin average volume will have me scaling back position size and carefully watching intraday volume and volatility.

Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) is an Infield Fly setup for Thursday. We will keep the stock on the radar for a move below 73.60, with an initial profit target around 72.95.
